Mother’s Day — a beautiful day to celebrate the special women in our lives who have shaped us along the way. But, for some, Mother’s Day can also be filled with many different emotions. However, God provides us with many bible verses for mothers that can give comfort for every season of motherhood.
Social media and the marketing world love to promote the ideal image of motherhood — the perfect mom with her little cherub on her hip. Yes, that image does exist in reality today, and I am truly happy for those who fit into that category. It is a precious time for them that can result in lifelong memories of love and joy. But just scroll through your social media feed, and you would think every single family today fits that picture.
Honestly, I was very blessed that this was the image of my own childhood in a lot of ways.
Mother’s Day Growing Up
Mother’s Day in our home actually started the day before, when an absolutely beautiful corsage would be delivered for Mama to wear to church the next morning. Of course, that first year when the corsage was filled with delicate white flowers instead of the pinks and reds of previous years, brought forth a lot of emotions.
The white flowers in a southern corsage symbolized that my grandmother was no longer with us. And while it was emotional for Mama, it was also part of her continued grief and healing. She was extremely honored to wear that first white corsage in Granny’s memory.

Sunday morning was always a bit of a comic moment when Daddy would attempt to pin the corsage onto Mama’s outfit. He would take that one large stick pin that came with the corsage and try to somehow secure those oversized flowers in a way that they did not simply fall over in defeat. It took patience and numerous tries, but somehow, he always managed to make it work.
Mother’s Day at Church
Mother’s Day at church was always a celebration of all mothers, but we also took special time to honor some special categories. There was always the oldest and youngest mothers, the mother with the most children present, and the mother whose child had traveled the farthest to come home for that very special day.
And the one organizing it all?
My mom.
And yes, I was very proud of her.

Mama always wanted to make everyone feel welcomed and special on any given day, but even more so on Mother’s Day.
The Realities
These memories are among some of my most precious, and I cherish them even more now that Mama is no longer physically here with us. But it is also important to remember that there are many different realities that mothers and families are facing.
Mother’s Day is not always filled with smiles and laughter.
For many, it can carry burdens, grief, and heartache.
But in those moments, we can turn to some the many bible verses for mothers that are found in God’s Word. Through these verses, God provides us with strength. We learn that we need only to rely on His nearness for comfort.
Loss of a Mother
There are many who have lost their own mother and feel that deep ache in their heart especially strongly on Mother’s Day.
For those hearts, Jesus offers comfort.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28
We pray that these hurting hearts can find the rest and comfort they need by reaching out to Jesus. He will sit with you. He will stay with you and never leave you. He is constant. Lean on Him.
Mothers Who Have Lost
There are also mothers who have lost a child. For her, Mother’s Day bring back the feelings of that loss ever so freshly. Turning to the bible verses for mothers in God’s word can bring a peace only he can provide.
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
— Psalm 46:1
While the loss of a child is unimaginable to most of us, God understands deep sacrifice and sorrow. He sent His only Son to die for all of us and for our sins. The mother that feels such loss today only needs to lean into Him, and He will comfort and sustain her.
Mothers That Are Hurting
Some mothers may not have lost a child to death, but they are still feeling deep pain. These mothers may have a child who is walking a prodigal path through addiction or destructive choices. She mourns in a different way. She mourns for a child who has walked away, leaving behind a mother carrying the heavy burden of the unknown.
Where are they?
What are they facing?
Are they safe?
And, again, God’s Word provides us with bible verses for mothers who are facing these challenges.
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
— Isaiah 41:10
God knows us. He knows our every fear, thought, and feeling. He will strengthen us and guide us through whatever lies ahead if we just reach out to Him and rely on Him. He never promises that things will be easy. However, He does promise that we do not have to face the future alone. He will not leave us.
In this season of her life, this mom feels so many emotions that she often has a hard time sorting through them. However, He will remain right beside her through whatever comes.
“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
— Philippians 4:13
This mom is strong … through her Trust in God!

Mother’s Trust in God
Throughout my journey as a mom, I have experienced highs and lows. I have experienced both the easy, joy-filled Mother’s Days and some very hard ones. But looking back now, I would not trade any of them.
Friend, I know that may sound a little crazy. But it was during those hard seasons that I learned to trust God the most. Those difficult moments helped build my faith into what it is today, and that growth is something I would never want to change.
Was there pain along the way?
Yes.
But God was with me through every step of it, walking beside me then just as He still does today.
A Meaning Behind the Hard Times
As a mom, it is hard to admit, but sometimes I wonder if the challenges we faced — and the ones we still continue to face — are what truly helped save us as a family.
I do not want to think that our son had to walk through some of those painful seasons in order for God to get our attention enough that we came running back to Him. But then I remind myself that God is in control, and God has a plan. And perhaps this journey was never just about me.
Only God knows how the paths we have walked will continue to unfold and how He may use them in our own and in our son’s future and testimony.
We simply have to continue to fully …
Trust in God.
Mother’s Day – Going Forward
Now, with my son grown and settling into a steadier season of life, I cherish today’s Mother’s Day and all the future ones yet to come. I am so proud of all he has overcome and of the strong Christian man he is becoming.
Of course, I still love getting those “Mom” phone calls, and I always will.
But I also treasure the adult relationship we now share, and I look forward with gratitude to all the future Mother’s Days we will spend together.

He is With Us
My friend, no matter the season you are in this Mother’s Day, I hope you will lean into God and remember to rely on Him always. Trust in God. He will comfort you through every season of life and bring a true peace that comes not from everything going “right,” but from knowing that all things are in His hands.
I wish you all a beautiful and blessed Mother’s Day filled with love, grace, and the reminder that you are never walking this journey alone. Whether your heart is overflowing with joy or quietly carrying burdens today, may you feel God’s presence beside you and His arms gently holding you close.
